These terms of use govern your access to and use of Payrollmath. By using the site you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Payrollmath, and “you” means anyone using the site. They are written the way the rest of the site is written, in plain English and in the order a reader would ask the questions, and nothing in them is meant to come as a surprise.
What the site provides
Payrollmath is a free set of calculators and articles about United States payroll: what a paycheck is worth after withholding, what a bonus leaves you with, and what a particular state’s rules do to the result. There is no account to create, no paywall, and no email address required to see an answer.
The site is independent. It is not affiliated with any bank, lender, payroll provider, insurer or government agency, and nobody pays to be featured here.
The calculators produce estimates, not advice
Every figure the site produces is an estimate, worked out from the inputs you supply and the assumptions shown alongside the result. It is not financial, tax, accounting or legal advice, and using the site does not create a professional relationship of any kind between you and us.
Your actual pay depends on things a calculator cannot see: how your employer has configured payroll, what you put on your Form W-4 and its state equivalents, pre-tax deductions and benefit elections, local taxes, your year-to-date earnings, mid-year rule changes, and the rounding conventions your payroll system uses. Treat a result here as a way to understand or question a number, then confirm anything that matters with your employer’s payroll department, your state’s revenue department, or a professional who knows your circumstances.
Do not use a figure from this site, on its own, to file a return, set your withholding, decide what to pay an employee, or settle a dispute about a paycheck.
Accuracy, sources and tax years
Tax and payroll figures come from primary sources: IRS publications for federal withholding, and each state’s own revenue or treasury department for state rates, allowances and payroll deductions. Rates are held in dated files, so a page can say which year it is working from.
That is a method, not a guarantee. Rules change, sometimes in the middle of a year. A government page can publish a figure that is later corrected or superseded. A page here can lag behind a change, and an error can survive review. We do not warrant that every figure on the site is current, complete or free of error.
We also reserve the right to change the math, the stated assumptions, or the tax year a page works from, without notice. A result you saw before may differ afterward, and the newer result is the one we stand behind.
If a number here looks wrong, please tell us. Say which calculator, what you entered and what you expected, and write to info@payrollmath.com. Corrections to the underlying math are treated as bugs and fixed for every page that shares the engine.
Who may use the site
The site is open to anyone and is written for a general audience. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
By using the site you confirm that you are old enough to agree to these terms where you live, or that a parent or guardian agrees to them on your behalf. If you use the site on behalf of an employer or a client, you confirm that you are authorized to accept these terms for them.
What you may do
You may use the site for your own purposes, personal or commercial. Run the calculators as often as you like, read the articles and the glossary, print or save a result, and quote a figure in your own work with a link back to the page it came from. None of that needs our permission.
What you may not do
- Copy, scrape or harvest the site’s content, rate data or calculator output at volume or by automated means, whether to republish it or to build a competing product or dataset.
- Reproduce a calculator, its engine, its rate files or a substantial part of an article elsewhere, with or without attribution.
- Frame or embed the calculators in another site or application, or present them as your own work.
- Interfere with the site or attempt to: load testing, denial of service, probing for vulnerabilities, circumventing access restrictions, or uploading anything malicious.
- Present an estimate from this site to anyone as a payroll record, an official filing figure, or professional advice.
- Remove or alter the notices and disclaimers that appear on printed and exported results.
- Use the site in breach of any law that applies to you.
We may block access to the site, with or without notice, where we believe someone is doing any of the above.
Your results and exported files
Figures produced from your own inputs are yours. You may keep, print, export and share them, and we claim no rights in them.
Printed and exported results carry a line stating that the figures are an estimate based on the inputs shown and are not financial, tax or legal advice. That line is part of the result, and it is there for whoever reads the page after you. Please leave it in place.
We do not keep a copy of anything you work out. The figures you enter are not stored, so there is nothing for us to retrieve, resend or recover later. If a result matters to you, save or print it at the time.
Our content and code
The text, articles, glossary, illustrations, design, name and logo of this site, together with the calculator engines, rate files and the code behind them, belong to us or are used under license. All rights not expressly granted in these terms are reserved.
You may quote a short passage or an individual figure with attribution and a link. Copying a page, an article or a calculator wholesale is not permitted. Third-party components used on the site remain subject to their own licenses, and nothing here grants you rights in them.
Links to other sites
We link out to the IRS, state revenue and treasury departments and other third parties, so that you can check a figure at its source. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their availability, and a link is not an endorsement. Once you follow one, that site’s own terms and privacy policy apply to you.
Advertising
The site does not currently show advertising. We intend to introduce it. When we do, advertising will be identifiable as advertising, it will not determine which calculator or which figure a page puts in front of you, and no advertiser will be able to buy a mention inside the content.
Availability and changes to the site
The site is provided free of charge, as it is and as available. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or available at any particular moment: maintenance, hosting problems and plain failures all happen.
We may add, change, retire or remove calculators, articles, pages and features at any time, and addresses on the site may change or be redirected. A page you have bookmarked may not be there indefinitely.
Disclaimer of warranties
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site and everything on it is provided without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be error free, that defects will be corrected, or that any figure it produces is accurate, current or suited to your situation.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising out of your use of the site or your reliance on anything it produces. That includes underpaid or overpaid tax, penalties and interest, lost or miscalculated income, decisions about a job, a contract or an employee, missed deadlines, lost data, and any indirect, incidental or consequential loss.
This is the practical reason for it: the site is free, and its figures are estimates produced from inputs we cannot verify. A calculator cannot know your circumstances, so the check before you act on a number has to be yours.
Where liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, our total liability to you for all claims is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid to use the site, which will normally be nothing, and 100 US dollars. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Indemnity
You agree to indemnify us against claims, losses and reasonable costs that arise from your breach of these terms, or from your misuse of the site or of anything it produces, including presenting an estimate from this site to someone else as advice or as an official record.
Privacy
What the site collects, what it does not collect, and how to opt out is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: there is no account, the figures you type into a calculator are not saved, the analytics services named there do set cookies, and anything you send us through the contact form or by email is used to reply to you and nothing else.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the site changes. The date at the foot of this page shows when it last changed, and the version on this page is the one that applies. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
General terms
Severability
If any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable, it applies to the maximum extent that is permitted and the rest of these terms remain in force.
No waiver
If we do not enforce a provision of these terms on one occasion, that is not a waiver of it, and we may still enforce it later.
Assignment
You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours to a successor if the site changes hands, and this page will say so when that happens.
Entire agreement
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole of the agreement between you and us about your use of the site, and they replace any earlier version of this page.
